This was the first time in many years thatandamp;nbsp;our club has fielded Gaelic Football teams, following the dissolving of St Kerrills GFC. We fielded teams at U12, U13, U16, Minor, U21 and Junior C levels.
As in the Hurling the U13 team had one of the highlights of the club’s football year, reaching the League Football final. Managed by Mick Carr and Dessie McCabe they won four out of five of the League games, defeating the football strongholds of Williamstown, Killererin, Cortoon and Headford. Their one loss was to Milltown, who they also took on in the Final, played at Menlough. They were defeated by just three points, 2-8 to 3-2. In the Championship we received walkovers against Menlough, Cortoon and Headford while suffering defeats against Milltown, St. Brendanandamp;rsquo;s and Kilconly, missing out on qualification for the knock out stages.
The Pearses U12 footballers played five League games this year, with good wins against Caltra and Athenry. The lads received walkovers from St. Gabriels, Kinvara, Craughwell and Monivea-Abbey, while we were defeated by Loughrea, Ballinasloe and Mountbellew-Moylough. Special mention must go to the boys of Ballymacward NS, who captured a Cumann na mBunscoil 9-a-side title, with most of the players also members of our Pearses football teams.
The U16 footballers were this year managed by Bobby Masterson and Joe Murray. They played eight League games, with notable victories over Killererin (6-12 to 1-4) and over Cortoon (8-8 to 1-13), a draw against Milltown and defeats against Clonbur, Headford, Menlough and St. Brendanandamp;rsquo;s and Kilkerrin-Clonberne. Pearses contested the League Shield Final, losing out to Williamstown in a game played under lights in Loughgeorge. In the Championship Pearses faced Headford and were unfortunate to lose out 4-6 to 2-8. Headford subsequently went on to capture the title.
